CAL Sports commemorates 90th anniversary, creates Hall of Fame

The Catholic Athletic League (CAL) is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year by establishing a Hall of Fame to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the league. The league will hold an inaugural gala on Oct. 18 to induct individuals selected from nominations on its website. The gala will also serve as a fundraiser to support the league in its mission.

The CAL was founded in 1935 as the Catholic Youth Organization, with a goal of reaching out to youths in parishes. The early years saw a period of growth in diocesan athletics, particularly in basketball, which became the pillar of the program. Despite challenges such as World War II, the league continued to grow and expand its offerings to include various sports for both boys and girls.

Today, about 40 schools and parishes with a combined 1,200 children participate in CAL sports, which now include cross country, tennis, cheerleading, volleyball, and soccer. The league aims to raise awareness among young people about the opportunities for involvement in sports and to honor those who have made the league what it is today.

Nominations for the Hall of Fame can be made on the CAL website, with a deadline of March 31. Eligible nominees must be Catholics in good standing and have shown longevity of participation, positive impact, and continued good work within CAL. The Hall of Fame will recognize individuals who have carried the mission of CAL into their daily lives and serve as an inspiration for future generations.
