Trump confirms he has no plans to dismiss Jerome Powell as Fed chair

Several law firms, including Paul Weiss, Wilkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, and O’Melveny & Myers LLP, reached deals with the Trump administration to avoid punitive executive orders. Brad Karp of Paul Weiss explained that the firm felt it had no choice due to the threat the EO posed to their relationship with the federal government and clients. The agreement included providing millions of dollars in free legal work for causes supported by the president, although Karp clarified that the administration would not determine which cases they took on. Wilkie Farr & Gallagher LLP and O’Melveny & Myers LLP also struck similar deals to protect their values and operations. K. Lee Blalack II of O’Melveny & Myers LLP stated that the agreement was consistent with the firm’s core values, emphasizing client service and community stewardship. W. Neil Eggleston of Kirkland & Ellis LLP assured that his firm would continue to operate with a merit-based philosophy and provide pro bono services on a non-partisan basis under the agreement. In response to inquiries from Democratic lawmakers, the firms’ explanations were deemed inadequate and raised concerns about potential coercion and hidden provisions in the agreements. Blumenthal and Raskin stated that the responses deepened their worries about the firms being pressured to provide free legal services for the president’s favored causes.
