Dr. Lisa Karamardian successfully secured nearly $300,000 in funding for the PeriGen artificial intelligence technology during a Hoag Innovators meeting in October 2023. The software, known as PeriWatch Vigilance, is an early warning system for obstetrics and had a significant impact on improving outcomes for mothers and babies at Hoag. Despite initial skepticism from nurses, the software has proven to be a valuable tool in guiding care decisions more objectively during labor.
Hoag’s Innovators, a group of philanthropists dedicated to funding innovative medical projects at the hospital, has raised over $28 million since its inception in 2017. The group now boasts 151 members, each contributing at least $250,000. At their recent meeting in April, Dr. Karamardian presented the success of the PeriGen technology, highlighting the reduction in Hoag’s cesarean section rate from nearly 29% to 24-25%.
The group also funded projects for Dr. Alison Wu’s obstetric and perinatal simulation lab, as well as Dr. January Lopez’s high-resolution 3D breast imaging system. The continued success of innovative projects funded by the Innovators reflects a commitment to advancing healthcare and improving patient outcomes. Patients like Michelle Wood have already benefited from the PeriGen technology, which detected a life-threatening situation during her labor, ultimately saving her and her son’s lives.
Moving forward, Dr. Karamardian and the Hoag Innovators are dedicated to continuing to push the boundaries of medical technology and improve patient care. Their next meeting is scheduled for October 16 at the Newport Beach Country Club.
