Alberti’s Walk-Off Single Secures Friday Victory for Patriots Against Rhode Island

George Mason Walks Off Rhode Island in Thrilling A-10 Opener

FAIRFAX, Va. – In a nail-biting Atlantic 10 matchup, George Mason University clinched a dramatic 5-4 victory over the University of Rhode Island on Friday, thanks to Lucas Alberti’s walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth.

The game began steadily, with both teams going scoreless until the third inning when the Patriots broke the deadlock. Owen Clyne’s lead-off double set the stage for James Quinn-Irons, who drove in the first run with a triple. Quinn-Irons later added another with a sacrifice fly, putting Mason ahead 3-0.

However, the Rams rallied back in the sixth. DJ Perron’s three-run homer flipped the score to give Rhode Island a brief 4-3 edge. The tension mounted as both teams exchanged runs, leading to a 4-4 tie entering the final inning.

Mason’s pitching held firm, with Gardner Meeks sealing the win after three hitless innings. In the ninth, a series of strategic plays allowed Alberti to secure the walk-off victory, scoring Quinn-Irons.

With this win, George Mason (28-14, 13-6 A-10) moves into sole possession of first place in the conference. The teams meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
