A suspect arrested in connection with the theft of Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem’s purse is in the U.S. illegally, according to U.S. Attorney Ed Martin. A second suspect, also undocumented, is still being sought. Martin emphasized that the theft did not appear to be targeted due to Noem’s position, stating it was merely a case of the thief finding a “nice looking purse.” Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is involved, and Martin mentioned that they would pursue criminal charges and potential deportation under President Trump’s directives.
The theft occurred when a masked man entered Capital Burger in Washington, D.C., where Noem was dining with her family. Surveillance footage showed the thief strategically observing the scene, sitting near Noem, and using his foot to discreetly drag her purse towards himself. He then swiftly pocketed the purse and exited, passing by plainclothes Secret Service agents without detection. Noem’s purse contained approximately $3,000 in cash, her DHS access badge, passport, credit cards, and keys.
The investigation is ongoing and being handled by both the D.C. Metropolitan Police and the U.S. Secret Service. When questioned about the theft during the White House Easter Egg Roll, Noem refrained from commenting further, noting that the situation remains unresolved. The U.S. Secret Service has not released additional information to ensure the safety of its agents.
