A shooting at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina left one person dead and six others injured during a campus event called Yard Fest, part of the university’s Viking Fest celebration. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday amid a gathering that attracted students.
The deceased was a 24-year-old man, not affiliated with the university; his identity is being withheld until his family is notified. Among the injured are four individuals with gunshot wounds, including three students, while two others were hurt in the ensuing chaos. Fortunately, none of the injuries are considered life-threatening, and all victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
In response to the shooting, the campus was placed on lockdown, which was later lifted as authorities increased security measures across the university grounds. Access to certain areas of the campus remained restricted as an added precaution.
Elizabeth City State University, a historically Black institution with an enrollment of about 2,300 students, expressed deep sorrow over the “senseless act.” The university, located approximately 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia, is taking steps to ensure the safety of its community in the aftermath of the shooting.
