Floyd County Schools Announces Winners of Recycling STEAM Challenge
Floyd County Schools (FCS) has proudly unveiled the winners of its inaugural Recycling STEAM Challenge, a program designed to blend environmental awareness with creativity through STEAM education. The initiative encouraged students to gather recyclable materials and reimagine them into innovative new products, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to sustainable practices.
Open to all grade levels and subjects, the challenge integrated seamlessly into many classroom environments, resulting in an impressive total of 78 student projects submitted for review. The challenge aimed not only to enhance creativity but also to educate students on the positive environmental impacts of recycling.
The winners of the challenge are:
- Primary School: 1st Place – Bailey Timberlake from APS for her “Model of the Solar System.”
- Elementary School: 1st Place – Maya Kerce from JES for her “Checkerboard.”
- Middle School: 1st Place – Ayden Patino from MMS for his “Poem Interpretation.”
- High School: 1st Place – Amaya Lofton from CHS for her “Crochet Coaster.”
“Our commitment to enriching everyday teaching and promoting responsible actions for a sustainable future remains unwavering,” said Celena Arrington, FCS Director of Instructional Technology and Online Learning. “We are excited to continue the Recycling STEAM Challenge for years to come.”
The FCS Department of Instructional Technology regularly sponsors STEAM challenges throughout the school year to ignite creativity, innovation, and problem-solving in classrooms. These initiatives provide teachers with essential resources to incorporate engaging activities into their curricula, nurturing the next generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
