Press Release: Police Officer Shoots Driver After Gas Station Incident in Johnston

Johnston, Rhode Island – A late-night altercation at a Shell gas station escalated to gunfire when a police officer shot a 28-year-old man who allegedly drove his car toward the officer. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday after police were dispatched following a report of a disturbance involving a man and a woman.

As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver accelerated, striking the officer. In response, the officer discharged his weapon multiple times. The wounded man was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he is expected to recover.

David Peterson, the man’s father, questioned the officer’s actions, asserting, "I don’t think the cops had any right to shoot him." He expressed a desire to view footage of the incident, insisting that his son would not intentionally harm a police officer. Although Peterson acknowledged his son’s previous legal troubles, he remarked that the young man had recently made positive changes in his life.

The officer involved sustained minor injuries and was also treated at a local hospital. Both the Rhode Island State Police and the Attorney General’s Office are conducting an investigation into the shooting.
