Rumors Spark Police Search in Rhode Island Following Serial Killer Speculations
In response to rampant rumors of a potential serial killer in New England, the Narragansett Police Department conducted searches for clandestine graves near Scarborough Beach. This hysteria ignited on social media after eight bodies were found across Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts between March and April. While posts on platforms like Facebook and TikTok fueled the frenzy—specifically within a now-renamed group with over 65,000 members—authorities have not established any homicide links among the deaths.
A concerning anonymous confession in the group prompted police action. However, Det. Sgt. Brent Kuzman noted that the post seemed to indicate a hoax, referencing "Rick Rolling" and including clues that spelled out "hoax." Despite this, police utilized resources, including cadaver dogs, to confirm safety, resulting in negative findings. Kuzman acknowledged the challenge of addressing such rumors, stating, “You always gotta do it… you want to do your due diligence.”
