RIDOT Director Peter Alviti Discusses Infrastructure Projects and Challenges
Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Director Peter Alviti recently addressed several key infrastructure initiatives and challenges facing the state.
I-95 Viaduct Reconstruction
Alviti highlighted the ongoing reconstruction of the I-95 North Viaduct, a critical corridor handling approximately 220,000 vehicles daily. To date, 12 bridges in the area have been rebuilt. The next phase, which includes adding lanes at three junctions, is expected to be completed by mid-January 2025. (wpri.com)

Addressing winter maintenance, Alviti noted enhanced surveillance, de-icing, and snow removal on the Washington Bridge to ensure safety during adverse weather. Additionally, a new weigh-in-motion detection system is set to become operational on the eastbound side in early 2025, aiming to identify overweight vehicles and prevent potential damage. A real-time structural health monitoring system is also being installed to continuously assess the bridge’s integrity. (wpri.com)
