Press Release: Officer-Involved Shooting at Johnston Gas Station
Johnston, RI – A police-involved shooting occurred Saturday night at a Shell gas station on Hartford Avenue, resulting in the hospitalization of a man identified as Peterson, who was also wanted on various charges.
Police responded to reports of a possible disturbance at around 11:30 p.m. when a third-party caller mentioned an argument between a man and woman. Upon arrival, officers located the man, later identified as Peterson, seated in the driver’s seat of a white Nissan Sentra. As one officer exited his patrol vehicle, Peterson accelerated forward, striking the officer. In response, the officer discharged his weapon multiple times at the moving vehicle.

At the time of the incident, Peterson was wanted on a warrant from the Rhode Island State Police related to charges of obstructing an officer and reckless driving. Following his hospitalization, Peterson was arraigned on several charges including felony assault, assault on a police officer, and resisting arrest. Authorities confirmed he is being held without bail due to probation and bail violations.
The shooting is now under investigation by the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, State Police, and the Johnston Police Department, adhering to established protocols.
