Spain’s Prime Minister Sánchez Reports Recovery from Major Blackout, Promises Reforms
In a press conference at the Moncloa Palace, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the country is "overcoming the worst" following widespread power outages affecting millions. The blackouts, which left many without electricity for hours and disrupted travel, are under investigation as Sánchez vowed to implement reforms to prevent future incidents.
A government commission will investigate the causes of the blackout, focusing on the role of private energy companies, while Sánchez dismissed claims that an excess of renewable energy caused the disruption.
In a coordinated effort, Portugal’s acting Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced plans for an independent audit by the EU’s Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators to investigate the blackout, urging for rapid answers to the crisis. Montenegro also initiated a technical committee to delve into the power failure’s causes.
Additionally, Spain’s highest criminal court, the Audiencia Nacional, has launched an investigation into potential "computer sabotage" as a contributing factor. Judge discussions included the consideration of cyberterrorism as a theory behind the failure.
Preliminary assessments by Spanish grid operator Red Eléctrica suggest the blackout was not caused by a cybersecurity incident or environmental factors, pointing instead to a "generation disconnection" originating in southwest Spain, a region reliant on solar energy.
Sánchez expressed gratitude to citizens for their resilience during the crisis, confirming that power had been largely restored, with 99.95% of energy demand met. The EU is closely monitoring the situation to draw lessons, with the aim of preventing similar occurrences in the future.
The incident has raised critical questions about energy security in Europe, particularly as it paves the way for discussions on infrastructure resilience and emergency preparedness.
