Press Release: Coalition of Attorneys General Files Lawsuit Against Trump Administration Over HHS Restructuring
Providence, RI—May 5, 2025: Attorney General Peter F. Neronha today announced a coalition of 20 attorneys general has filed a lawsuit in federal court to challenge the restructuring of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Trump administration. The lawsuit alleges that the administration’s actions—including the termination of over 10,000 federal health workers and the closure of numerous regional offices—are harming essential health programs and services.
Since taking office, Secretary Kennedy’s restructuring initiative has led to the dismantling of crucial HHS functions, impacting public health on multiple levels. Programs designed to protect miners from black lung disease, provide mental health support, and monitor infectious diseases, such as measles, have been severely compromised.
Attorney General Neronha commented, “These reckless cuts endanger the health and safety of millions of Americans, including vulnerable groups like pregnant women and 9/11 first responders.” The coalition argues that these moves violate federal laws and undermine public health, urging the court to restore funding and critical services. Previously, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against similar funding cuts, indicating judicial concern over the administration’s actions.
