Florida Man and His Dog Presumed Victims of Bear Attack

Authorities are investigating a suspected bear attack in which an 89-year-old man, Robert Markel, and his dog were found dead at his home near Jerome, Florida. The incident was reported shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday, with Markel and his dog discovered in separate locations within a few hundred yards of each other. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) spokesperson George Reynaud confirmed that the deaths were due to a bear attack but stated it is unclear if a single bear or multiple bears were involved. The attack may have occurred at different times.

In response to the incident, officials have established a perimeter around the area and deployed drones to search for the bear or bears, while also setting bear traps nearby. DNA evidence collected at the scene is expected to aid in the investigation and clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack. Being in the appropriate habitat for the species, the bear involved is likely a Florida black bear, which is the only type of bear residing naturally in the state. According to the FWC, there are approximately 4,050 Florida black bears in the region.

The tragic deaths underscore the potential dangers humans face when living in close proximity to wildlife, particularly in areas like Collier County, which is adjacent to the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area. Wildlife officials are continuing their investigation to ascertain the events leading up to the attack and to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
