Authorities are investigating a suspected bear attack in which an 89-year-old man, Robert Markel, and his dog were found dead at his home near Jerome, Florida. The incident was reported shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday, with Markel and his dog discovered in separate locations within a few hundred yards of each other. Being in the appropriate habitat for the species, the bear involved is likely a Florida black bear, which is the only type of bear residing naturally in the state. According to the FWC, there are approximately 4,050 Florida black bears in the region.
