In a tragic incident in Virginia, an 18-year-old named Michael Bosworth, Jr. was killed after a homeowner, Tyler Chase Butler, opened fire during what the teenagers claimed was a TikTok ding-dong ditch prank. The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. on Saturday, prompting a dispatch to a residence in Spotsylvania County following reports of an ongoing burglary. When deputies arrived, they found Bosworth and another juvenile with gunshot wounds. Bosworth later died at the hospital, while the other juvenile received treatment and was released. A third juvenile who was present in the group was unharmed.
Butler, 27, was arrested and faces charges of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and the illegal use of a firearm in connection with the incident. He believed the teens were attempting to break into his home, according to his statements to investigators. A search warrant affidavit revealed that one of the teens explained they were recording pranks where they ring doorbells and flee, having previously visited other homes in the area.
Bosworth was a senior at Massaponax High School, where school counselors are set to provide support to students and staff following his death, which occurred just hours before the school’s prom. The community has been informed about available counseling resources for those coping with the tragedy.
