New England Revolution Advances in US Open Cup with Oliveira’s Late Goal
PAWTUCKET, R.I. — The New England Revolution secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Rhode Island FC in the US Open Cup, thanks to a dramatic goal from 17-year-old Cristiano Oliveira in the 88th minute. The teenager, who came on as a second-half substitute, netted his first goal for the team, propelling New England into the round of 16.
The match remained leveled after Tomás Chancalay opened the scoring in the 38th minute, followed by Rhode Island’s Maxi Rodriguez equalizing just 12 minutes into the second half. With time running out and the score tied, Oliveira found himself at the right place to convert a rebound after Gevork Diarbian’s cross hit the far post. The goal marked how effectively coach Caleb Porter has relied on the depth of his squad, entrusting several Revolution II players during the match.
"This was a no-brainer for me," said Porter, praising his roster decisions as the Revolution prepares to face the Chicago Fire next. New England’s performance was significant, especially as they faced the reigning USL Eastern Conference champions.
The Revolution’s lineup featured notable season debuts, including goalkeeper Alex Bono and midfielder Allan Oyirwoth, while Andrew Farrell extended his record for appearances with the franchise. Although Rhode Island held its ground for significant portions of the game, the Revolution maintained a slight edge in shots, finishing 14-12.
Porter applauded the excellent atmosphere at the new Centreville Bank Stadium, emphasizing his players’ need to perform on such stages. The Revolution will head into their next MLS match, riding a four-game winning streak, looking for their fifth straight victory as they visit Orlando City on Saturday night.
