Tragic Plane Crash Claims Lives of Father, Son, and Dog
A small plane crash in Simi Valley, California, claimed the lives of 69-year-old Paul Berkovitz, his 36-year-old son, Matthew, and their dog, Brody. The single-engine Van’s RV-10 crashed into two homes shortly after taking off from William J. Fox Airfield, with eyewitnesses reporting the aircraft circling and struggling in the air before it went down around 2 p.m. on Saturday. Fortunately, the residents of both homes escaped unharmed, though one was heavily damaged.
The Berkovitz family, with significant ties to New England, expressed their heartbreak in a statement, thanking first responders while requesting privacy during their mourning. Matthew was deeply involved in local community efforts at the Swansea Country Club and shared his father’s passion for aviation and animal rescue. Both were active volunteers with Pilots N Paws, a nonprofit aiding animal rescue efforts across the country.
The local animal rescue, PAWS New England, hailed their selflessness and highlighted the gap their absence leaves in the rescue community. As investigations by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board continue, both organizations are expected to provide insights into the incident in the coming months.
