Special Election Planned to Fill Vacant Senate President Position

Special Election Announced for Rhode Island Senate District 4

PROVIDENCE, RI — A special election will be held this summer for Senate District 4 in Rhode Island following the passing of long-serving Senate President Dominick Ruggerio. The Rhode Island Board of Elections has set the special election calendar, with the primary scheduled for July 8 and the general election on August 5.

Ruggerio, a prominent Democrat who represented parts of Providence and North Providence, passed away last month at the age of 76 after facing a battle with cancer. He had occupied his Senate seat since 1985, making him a significant figure in Rhode Island politics.

Candidates interested in running for the vacant seat must declare by May 29-30. They will then have until June 10 to gather the necessary signatures to qualify for the ballot. Voter registration deadlines are set for June 8 for the primary and July 6 for the general election.

As of now, former Providence state Rep. Marcia Ranglin-Vassell has announced her candidacy for the seat, indicating a competitive race ahead.

This election marks a pivotal moment for the constituents of Senate District 4 as they will choose a successor to carry forward the legacy of a long-standing political figure in their community.
