Texas UIL Greenlights Wearable Wristband Play-Calling Tech for 2025

Texas High School Football Embraces Wearable Play-Calling Technology for 2025 Season

In a groundbreaking move, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) has authorized the use of wearable play-calling technology for Texas high school football teams, set to launch in the 2025 season. Coaches will be able to communicate plays to players via wristband-like devices, enhancing strategic gameplay while maintaining some crucial restrictions.

This innovative technology, detailed in a report from TexasFootball.com, allows for one-way communication from coaches situated in the booth or press box directly to players on the field. Importantly, these devices will only transmit text messages, prohibiting any audio communication. The UIL has clarified that this technology does not involve coach-to-player helmet communications.

The decision comes on the heels of concerns regarding sign stealing, which marred the 2024 high school football state championships, leading to the removal of individuals caught attempting to steal signals. "Our coaches are adamant about having access to this technology," noted Joe Martin, Executive Director of the Texas High School Coaches Association. Some coaches, like Coppell’s Antonio Wiley, acknowledge the potential advantages this communication method could offer during games, although they express reservations about its immediate implementation since the technology will not have been tested in the spring.

GoRout, a Minnesota-based company providing the wristband technology, expressed enthusiasm about the UIL’s decision. "Texas is leading the way in football innovation,” said Chief Partnerships Officer Drew Robinson.

As the 2025 season approaches, fans can look forward to seeing how teams adapt to this new playing landscape, promising an exciting evolution in high school football coordination.
