Sen. Amy Klobuchar: Democrats Would Have Benefited from a Primary in the 2024 Election

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., reflected on the 2024 Democratic landscape during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” suggesting that the party would have benefited from a primary before former President Joe Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris. Klobuchar noted that while hindsight reveals the drawbacks of Biden’s early endorsement, she preferred to focus on current challenges rather than dwell on past decisions.

When questioned about the implications of Harris’ loss to Trump for future female presidential candidates, Klobuchar expressed hope that it wouldn’t discourage nominations of women. She highlighted the success of women in leadership roles both internationally and within the U.S., citing examples of female governors and senators who had performed well in previous elections. Klobuchar emphasized the long-standing barriers women face in politics and underlined that success should not be measured solely through presidential campaigns.

Despite hints about possibly running for president again, Klobuchar avoided the topic, stating her current focus is on her Senate responsibilities, including essential services like Medicaid and Social Security, and addressing economic challenges. She mentioned her previous run for president in 2020 and how she later endorsed Biden, who secured the Democratic nomination and presidency.

Looking ahead to the 2028 elections, Klobuchar could face rivals from her 2020 candidacy, including notable figures such as former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Cory Booker. Other potential candidates include various governors and representatives, suggesting a crowded field as the Democratic Party prepares for future contests.
