Carlo Ancelotti, currently the head coach of Real Madrid, will transition to become the coach of Brazil’s national soccer team, marking the first time in a century that a foreign coach has taken this role. The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) announced that Ancelotti will officially take over on May 26, following the conclusion of the Spanish league season. CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues emphasized that hiring Ancelotti is a significant move aimed at restoring Brazil’s status as a soccer powerhouse.
Ancelotti, whose contract with Real Madrid extends until 2024, is expected to end it early to take up his new position. He will lead Brazil in upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Ecuador and Paraguay. His appointment comes after a turbulent period for the Brazilian team, which has struggled in qualifiers, currently sitting fourth. Ancelotti will replace Dorival Júnior, who was dismissed after a poor performance.
This will be Ancelotti’s first full-time international coaching experience, although he was an assistant for Italy in the 1994 World Cup. He brings a wealth of experience, having coached top clubs across Europe, winning multiple league titles and trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles. The announcement of Ancelotti’s shift follows a disappointing season for Madrid, which has seen them drop in league standings and lose several key matches to rivals Barcelona.
Former player Xabi Alonso is anticipated to take over as Real Madrid’s manager following Ancelotti’s departure. Madrid will still compete in the upcoming Club World Cup before he officially takes the reins for Brazil. Ancelotti’s appointment is viewed as a bold strategy by the CBF to reinvigorate the national team and secure a spot in the next World Cup.
