Rhode Island Lawmakers Push for Office of Inspector General
Providence, RI – State Representative George Nardone (R-Coventry) is leading a legislative initiative to establish an Office of Inspector General in Rhode Island, responding to growing calls for independent accountability within state government. At a Statehouse news conference on Wednesday, Nardone announced that around 20 lawmakers from both parties, including one independent, have co-sponsored his proposal.
"Taxpayers expect and deserve responsible stewardship of their money and transparency in government operations," Nardone stated, asserting that an independent Inspector General would serve as a crucial oversight mechanism. Currently, Rhode Island relies on two offices—the Office of Internal Audit and the Office of Auditor General—to monitor state spending, but Nardone argues these lack the autonomy needed to ensure effective oversight.
The proposed Inspector General’s office aims to prevent and detect issues related to fraud, waste, and mismanagement, with oversight responsibilities over existing auditing operations. Proponents have long sought to create this office, akin to establishments in other states, with Nardone highlighting that expected savings could outweigh the $1.5 million price tag for its operation.
A recent Salve Regina University poll indicated strong public support for the initiative, reinforcing the sentiment around scrutinizing the extensive $14 billion state budget. House GOP Leader Mike Chippendale (R-Foster) underscored examples of alleged legislative influence that heighten the need for independent oversight.
However, the bill’s future is uncertain. House Speaker Joe Shekarchi expressed skepticism, citing former President Trump’s controversial dismissal of independent inspectors general at federal agencies. Shekarchi’s remarks reflect broader concerns about the necessity and effectiveness of such an office in Rhode Island.
As discussions continue, Nardone and supporters remain committed to advocating for enhanced transparency and accountability in state government operations.
