Manufacturing Technology Series Showcases Innovation Amid Tariff Concerns
West Springfield, MA — The Manufacturing Technology Series East 2025 trade show captivated attendees at The Big E this week, showcasing cutting-edge automation technologies designed to meet the needs of modern manufacturers. A standout attraction included a robot sorting and stacking lip balm tubes, demonstrating the potential of automation for enhancing efficiency on factory floors. Kyle Richard, VP of Elm Electrical, highlighted the robot’s $30,000 price tag and the looming threat of a 24% tariff on imported machines, a remnant of the Trump administration’s trade policies.
Despite these hurdles, manufacturers remain keen on adopting new technologies to address workforce challenges. Dave Morton from SME emphasized the manufacturing sector’s preference for stability and predictability, essential qualities as the industry grapples with an aging workforce and evolving market demands in sectors like aerospace and medical devices.
The show is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees and feature 500 exhibiting companies showcasing innovations, including plasma cutters capable of reaching 50,000 degrees and advanced CNC machines. Local high school students participated in the Bright Minds Student Summit, engaging with technologies that piqued their interest in engineering careers. “It’s interesting to see all this technology,” noted Maysin Whitehead, a tenth grader drawn to the field.
Brian Such of Marubeni Citizen-Cincom detailed the capabilities of their CNC Swiss machines, which produce highly precise components for the medical industry. The event not only highlights the region’s manufacturing heritage, but also aims to inspire the next generation, ensuring the industry continues to thrive in the Pioneer Valley.
