Rhode Island General Assembly Passes Pro-Taiwan Resolution

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — On Tuesday, the Rhode Island General Assembly passed a resolution supporting Taiwan, showcasing the Taiwan flag in its legislative chamber. Both the Senate and House of Representatives unanimously adopted resolutions congratulating President Lai Ching-te and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim on their second year in office. The resolutions commended the “vibrancy of Taiwan’s democracy” and aimed to bolster economic ties through a proposed US-Taiwan agreement to avoid double taxation.

The measures reaffirm that U.S. policy towards Taiwan is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, rejecting UN Resolution 2758, and advocate for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. They were introduced by Senate President Valarie Lawson and House Speaker Pro Tempore Brian Patrick Kennedy.

During the event, members of the Taiwanese community performed the national anthems of both nations, highlighting their strong ties. Taiwan’s representative in Boston, Charles Liao, expressed gratitude for the legislature’s actions, emphasizing that they not only reinforce support for Taiwan’s democratic values but also inspire the people of Taiwan to uphold their freedom. The resolutions signify a commitment to mutual challenges and cooperation between Rhode Island and Taiwan.
