Rhode Island Considers Legal Action Against Deloitte Amid Cyber-Breach Fallout

Providence, RI — Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha is contemplating legal action against Deloitte, the state contractor involved in a significant cyber-breach that compromised the personal data of over 644,000 Rhode Islanders. This follows a third-party review by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, revealing that the breach of RI Bridges—an online portal for health and human services—went undetected for approximately five months.

During a Statehouse press conference, Governor Dan McKee disclosed that a "threat actor" infiltrated the RI Bridges system using unauthorized Deloitte credentials last July, with the breach only being identified in December. "Deloitte missed some issues that we certainly hold them responsible for," McKee asserted, emphasizing the state’s commitment to pursuing accountability for the incident.

According to the latest findings, the breach has affected 644,401 individuals, with more than 107,757 names identified through CrowdStrike’s forensic analysis. In response to the breach, the state has implemented enhanced security measures to protect RI Bridges from future attacks, and benefits have been distributed without disruption.

As part of the response, letters will be sent to individuals recently identified to inform them of the potential risks to their personal data. The McKee Administration has advised the public to take proactive steps to safeguard their information, regardless of their connection with the RI Bridges system. Residents are encouraged to visit the cyberalert.ri.gov website for resources on credit monitoring, fraud alerts, and maintaining cybersecurity practices.

Deloitte has not yet commented on the allegations or findings related to the breach. The state remains resolute in its efforts to protect the data and security of its residents.
