Westerly’s Music Scene Thrives with Next Up Music Inc. Initiative
Westerly is witnessing a vibrant resurgence in its rock ‘n’ roll scene, fueled by the newly established nonprofit, Next Up Music Inc. The organization aims to empower young musicians through scholarships, education, and mentorship as they navigate careers in the music industry. The nonprofit, founded by Vanessa Harwood and attorney Mike Serra, will host its first fundraiser—a vinyl album release party—on May 31 at Paddy’s Beach Club.
Highlighting the initiative’s significance, the founders emphasize its roots in community support, stemming from Big Lux’s Next Up Festival, which showcases local talent every September. Musicians like Jacob Harwood, along with peers from the band Purple Tide, express excitement for both the party and the festival’s enriching atmosphere for young artists.
The organization’s mission is to create a nurturing environment for aspiring musicians, emphasizing original music and performance opportunities. With local support from figures such as Brigitte Hopkins of the Westerly Library, the community is eager to witness the talents of its youth flourish. As local musicians continue to band together, Westerly’s musical legacy remains vibrant and dynamic.
