Press Release: Monty Don Unveils Dog-Friendly Garden at Chelsea Flower Show
The esteemed Chelsea Flower Show, organized by the Royal Horticultural Society, is set to captivate visitors for five days, and this year, it showcases a unique garden designed by beloved horticulturist Monty Don, aimed at delighting both dogs and their owners. With an expected attendance of 140,000, the event will feature a special visit from King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
At the heart of Don’s garden is a spacious lawn, perfect for dogs to run, play, and rest, complemented by a cozy wooden bench adorned with cushions. The design draws inspiration from Don’s own retriever, Ned, who has been a staple companion during his 22 years presenting BBC’s "Gardeners’ World." During the design process, Ned was allowed to roam the plot, influencing the garden’s layout by his instinctual paths through the planting, leading to a more organic design.
Emphasizing simplicity, Don created a space featuring a gently tousled lawn with dandelions, daisies, and clover, alongside hazelnut trees and colorful spring flowers. Notably, the garden includes a frisbee, a charming stream for cooling off, and pathways engraved with the names of Camilla’s late terriers, a heartfelt tribute to her pets.
While Don’s creation will not be part of the official judging process, he aims to earn the public’s admiration, admitting to feelings of nervousness. After the show concludes, the garden will be donated to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, ensuring ongoing joy for local canine residents. Monty Don’s endeavor highlights the profound connection between gardens and our four-legged friends, celebrating the simple joy of nature and companionship.
