Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Trembles the Big Island of Hawaii

On Tuesday morning, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck just offshore of the Big Island of Hawaii, approximately 5 miles southeast of Pāhala, at 9:37 a.m. local time. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that no tsunamis were generated as a result of the quake, and officials noted that shaking may have been felt in some areas without causing damage to buildings or infrastructure. The Governor’s office reported on social media that the earthquake was unlikely to produce any significant impacts.

The earthquake, recorded at a depth of about 20 miles, was part of a series of small seismic events in the region over the past few days, with magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 2.3. Activity was noted at Kīlauea volcano, where the Halema’uma’u crater had erupted and emitted lava and steam. However, the USGS stated that the earthquake did not appear to affect either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes. Approximately 40 reports were logged from residents who felt the quake.

This area has experienced numerous small earthquakes, referred to as a “seismic swarm,” since at least 2019, with seismic activity documented back to the 1960s. The USGS continues to monitor the situation but emphasized that no significant damage was expected following the earthquake, aligning with their historical data on seismic activity in the region.
