After the Fire, RI Community Unites to Support Those in Need

Matunuck Oyster Bar Devastated by Early Morning Blaze

Rhode Island’s popular dining destination, Matunuck Oyster Bar, was engulfed in flames on Tuesday morning, marking a significant loss just before the summer tourism season. Firefighters responded to the two-alarm blaze shortly before 4 a.m. Despite the structure remaining upright, officials are concerned it may be a “total loss.” The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Farouk Rajab, CEO of the Rhode Island Hospitality Association, expressed the community’s sorrow, stating, “We’re all in mourning, really.” To aid the restaurant’s employees and support the rebuilding, a GoFundMe campaign initiated by regular patrons has quickly raised over $50,000.

Matunuck Oyster Bar, opened by Perry Raso in 2009, transformed from an old restaurant into a renowned “pond-to-table” venue, celebrated for its fresh oysters and aquaculture tours. Raso, admired for his dedication to sustainable seafood and community service, has been pivotal in educating the public on aquaculture in southern New England.

Local officials and patrons alike reflected on the restaurant’s significance, with many citing cherished memories created at Matunuck. Congressman Seth Magaziner emphasized its reputation as a must-visit spot, even for visiting dignitaries.

Raso, known for his humility and hard work, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, stating, “While we are heartbroken, we are committed to reopening and welcoming guests back to our tables as soon as possible.”

As the investigation progresses, the community rallies behind Raso and Matunuck Oyster Bar, a cherished institution in Rhode Island known for its culinary excellence and commitment to sustainable practices.
