Community Concerns Grow Over Chariho School Committee Meeting Conduct
Hopkinton, RI – Attendees at the Chariho School Committee meeting on May 13 expressed alarming concerns regarding the conduct of several committee members. Catherine Giusti, a local resident and former chairwoman of the Chariho School Committee, criticized the dismissive behavior exhibited during the Public Forum, a vital platform for community feedback.
Giusti highlighted the disengagement of member Dianne Tefft, who was observed turning away from speakers and exhibiting unwelcoming body language. This behavior undermines the essential respect required in public discourse and contradicts Tefft’s earlier commitment to “Save Hope Valley,” particularly following budget decisions that threaten the school’s future.
Of particular concern was the harsh treatment of Superintendent Gina Picard, who faced personal attacks from a former council candidate. Giusti emphasized the importance of focusing criticism on policies rather than resorting to personal attacks, particularly against a woman in a leadership role.
As the effort to remove Superintendent Picard has been politically charged since 2022, Giusti urged for a more respectful and constructive dialogue that recognizes strong leadership in public education. “Here’s to strong women: may we allow them to lead without constant attempts to silence them,” she concluded, calling for unity and respect in public service.
