Headline: Chaotic Scene Unfolds as 14 Dogs Escape Owner in Narragansett Shopping Center
In a bizarre incident at a Narragansett shopping center, local animal control responded to a report of 14 dogs running loose. When RISPCA’s Dale Kezirian arrived, the dogs had been wrangled back into the owner’s SUV, which resembled a “clown car” given the number of animals inside.
Witnesses described the scene as shocking. Cait Sincerny, who was shopping with her young son, recalled the chaos as dogs entered nearby Marshalls and HomeGoods stores. Kezirian noted the breed, primarily Belgian Malinois, is known for its protective nature and intelligence, often used in police work.
A plan was set in motion to transfer the dogs to a nearby fenced ball field for their safe removal. However, as the owner began to open the door, all 14 dogs bolted out, resulting in panic. During the commotion, one dog was mauled by several others until a local police officer intervened, using pepper spray to separate the dogs. The injured dog was taken to RISPCA and underwent surgery but is expected to survive.
Ultimately, RISPCA took in three dogs, while the South Kingstown Animal Shelter took custody of six. The owner, who admitted to rationing the dogs’ food during travel due to financial strain, voluntarily surrendered several animals after a negotiated agreement. RISPCA often encounters hoarding situations, but this incident was particularly unusual.
Kezirian emphasized the need to swiftly place the dogs into care to avoid prolonged legal processes. "We must make difficult decisions to ensure the welfare of these animals," he stated. The owner left the scene with five dogs, which included those deemed too old or ill for adoption.
