Matunuck Oyster Bar, Fire-Damaged, Lacked Sprinkler System

Matunuck Oyster Bar Suffers Major Fire Ahead of Summer Season

South Kingstown, RI – A two-alarm fire engulfed the popular Matunuck Oyster Bar in the early hours of Tuesday, resulting in significant damage to the building. Fire officials reported that they responded to the blaze just before 4 a.m. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was accidental, although the exact cause remains undetermined.

South Kingstown Fire Chief Steven Pinch confirmed that the structural integrity of the building has been severely compromised, with extensive water, fire, and smoke damage evident throughout the premises. “The building is still standing, but the damage is significant,” he noted. This incident highlights ongoing concerns surrounding fire safety regulations, particularly as it comes more than twenty years after Rhode Island implemented stricter fire codes in the wake of the 2003 Station nightclub tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of 100 individuals.

The Matunuck Oyster Bar, known for its vibrant seafood offerings, was originally constructed in 1946. Since being purchased by owner Perry Raso in 2009, it underwent several renovations, including the addition of a second floor and outdoor seating. Despite its capacity to seat 222 guests, it did not meet the occupancy threshold for mandatory sprinkler systems as outlined in state fire codes.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the blaze. However, the timing is especially unfortunate, occurring just before the Memorial Day weekend, marking the beginning of the summer tourist season. A GoFundMe campaign launched by regular patrons has already raised over $140,000 to aid employees and support rebuilding efforts.

Local fire inspectors had last checked the establishment in September 2024, flagging minor violations that were promptly rectified. As the investigation continues, community support remains strong for one of Rhode Island’s culinary landmarks.
