Zackery Brandon Barfield, a 31-year-old from Florida, was sentenced to 30 days in prison for illegally shooting bottlenose dolphins and using poisoned bait to kill them. Prosecutors stated that these actions, which occurred between 2022 and 2023 while operating charter fishing boats in Panama City, stemmed from Barfield’s frustration with dolphins eating fish off his clients’ lines. He shot at five dolphins, killing at least one, and fed an estimated 24 to 70 dolphins toxic bait.
The incidents were particularly alarming as they occurred in front of children; Barfield fired his shotgun while elementary-aged kids were present aboard his boat. Barfield admitted to his actions and expressed frustration regarding the dolphins “stealing” fish. He utilized methomyl, a pesticide, to poison the baitfish over several charter trips, knowingly disregarding its environmental impact and the regulations established under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Following a tip-off in 2023, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) launched an investigation into his activities. Barfield ultimately pleaded guilty to two counts of illegal taking of a marine mammal and one count related to the prohibited use of a pesticide. He will serve the 30-day sentence concurrently for all counts and has been fined $51,000. His shotgun, used during these illegal activities, has been confiscated under the plea agreement.
