Harvard Revokes Tenure from Notable Ethics Professor, Marking First Occurrence in 80 Years

Harvard University has revoked the tenure of Francesca Gino, a professor at Harvard Business School, following longstanding allegations of data fraud. Gino, known for her research on honesty and ethics, was placed on administrative leave in June 2023 amid accusations of falsifying research data. A spokesperson for Harvard confirmed the revocation but offered no further details due to university policies on personnel matters. Gino has not publicly commented on the situation.

Since the 1940s, no faculty member has lost tenure at Harvard, making Gino’s case exceptionally rare. Gino joined Harvard in 2010 and served as the head of the Negotiations, Organizations, and Markets Unit from 2018 to 2021. Her work has been widely publicized in major media outlets, including The New York Times and NBC News.

The controversy began in 2021 when researchers from the blog Data Colada raised concerns about the data integrity in several of Gino’s studies. Their findings, which they reported to the university, led to an extensive 18-month internal investigation that ultimately found her guilty of “research misconduct.” Gino responded by filing a $25 million lawsuit against Harvard and Data Colada, claiming the investigation was biased and that she had not engaged in academic fraud.

A federal judge dismissed the defamation claims in September but allowed Gino’s contract breach claims to proceed, asserting that her disciplinary actions did not align with Harvard’s established tenure policies. Gino launched a website to share her perspective and maintain that she never committed academic fraud, asserting confidence that she will ultimately prove her case in court.
