Political Engagement at Brown’s Commencement

Political Activism Highlighted During Brown University Commencement

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — Brown University’s commencement weekend evolved into a platform for political expression once again this year, with distinct displays of pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel sentiments. Students donned hand-printed pro-Palestinian stoles, accompanied by QR codes linking to fundraising organizations focused on Gaza. One student told NBC 10 News, "We brought it into the color ceremony so the livestream could catch it."

In contrast, the Rhode Island Coalition for Israel organized a peaceful demonstration outside the university’s gates, waving Israeli flags and sponsoring an aerial banner reading "Brown for Israel." This group aims to create a supportive environment for Jewish students and families amid the ongoing political tensions.

While the student expressions highlighted the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the university administration had not responded by the evening of the report. This year’s commencement underscored the increasingly politicized atmosphere at educational institutions, reflecting broader societal debates while students seek to create awareness and support for their causes.
