Rhode Island Commemorates the Sacrifices of Those We Lost This Memorial Day

Memorial Day Remembrance in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — On Memorial Day, state and local leaders across southern New England are coming together to honor the service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee has directed that flags be flown at half-staff until noon, urging residents to join in this tribute.

In a heartfelt tradition, Newport hosts a poignant display featuring thousands of boots at Fort Adams, each symbolizing a U.S. service member who lost their life in action since 9/11. Organized by Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, the exhibit showcases 7,000 boots, complete with name placards and flags, offering a space for families, friends, and veterans to pay their respects year after year.

This year, the display is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., encouraging everyone to visit and remember those who served. The solemn gathering serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for the freedoms enjoyed today. As communities unite, the spirit of Memorial Day resonates profoundly throughout Rhode Island and beyond.
