Massachusetts Construction Firm Settles Environmental Violations for $11 Million
Providence, RI — In a significant legal resolution, Barletta Heavy Division Inc., a Massachusetts construction company, has agreed to pay $11 million to settle criminal charges related to the illegal dumping of contaminated fill in Rhode Island. Attorney General Peter Neronha announced the settlement last week, revealing that the company not only violated state laws but also misled regulators about the fill’s source during a highway construction project.
The case traces back to early 2023 when Neronha filed state charges following Barletta’s $1.5 million federal settlement for similar violations linked to a $247 million project rehabilitating the Route 6/10 interchange, which began in 2018. Investigations uncovered that Barletta transported hazardous materials to the site, amounting to over 4,500 tons in 2020.
Neronha stated, “Rhode Islanders deserved a better outcome,” emphasizing that the substantial settlement reflects the seriousness of Barletta’s actions. Attorney Shannon Reilly, representing the company, expressed relief at concluding the matter, allowing Barletta to focus on future projects. Proceeds from the settlement will benefit dental care services for youth in Providence.
