Meet the Two Finalists for CCRI President

Press Release: CCURI Presidential Search Concludes with Two Finalists

In a significant development for the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), the search for its next president has narrowed to two finalists: interim president Rosemary Costigan and Christopher Reber, current president of Hudson County Community College in Jersey City, N.J. The announcement was made by the state Council on Postsecondary Education.

Family Court Judge Elizabeth Ortiz, co-chairing the search committee alongside former Providence Teachers Union president Steve Smith, revealed that out of at least 44 applicants, these two individuals have risen to the top. Historically, interim presidents who reach this stage often emerge as favorites, as evidenced by last year’s selection of Jack Warner at Rhode Island College.

Costigan, who has served as interim president for two years, has a longstanding connection with CCRI, having been instrumental in enhancing its academic programs and understanding the workforce needs of Rhode Island. She embodies the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy, making her a strong contender for the role.

On the other hand, Reber boasts an impressive track record as well. Leading Hudson County Community College since 2018, he received the CEO of the Year award from the American Association of Community Colleges last year. His initiatives, such as the Hudson Scholars program, created strategic pathways for students post-COVID-19, demonstrating his commitment to higher education.

In the coming week, both candidates will engage with students, faculty, staff, and alumni in forums aimed at gathering feedback. The Council aims to appoint a permanent president by July 1, paving the way for the future leadership of CCRI.
