Scottish Startup ReVentas Secures Funding to Expand Plastic Recycling Technology

ReVentas Secures Series A Funding to Revolutionize Plastic Recycling

Scottish startup ReVentas has successfully completed its Series A funding round, aimed at scaling its innovative plastic recycling technology from pilot projects to commercial operations within the next three years. The funding has garnered backing from prominent investors, including Orlen VC, Beiersdorf Venture Capital, and Scottish Enterprise, all committed to enhancing sustainable practices in the circular economy.

With the fresh capital injection, ReVentas plans to launch its first commercial plant, which will have an initial capacity of 10,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) and is expected to begin operations by 2027. By 2031, the plant’s capacity is set to expand by an additional 40,000 tpa.

CEO Tom Rose emphasized the urgent need for scalable recycling solutions, stating, "The industry has failed to provide workable solutions at scale to deal with the impact [of plastics] on our environment." ReVentas aims to address this gap by ensuring that today’s plastic waste can be reintroduced into the market as products tomorrow.

Globally, plastic production reaches around 390 million tonnes annually, with less than 9% being recycled. The complexity of plastics, along with contamination issues, often leads to incineration or downcycling. ReVentas focuses specifically on recycling polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), which account for over 50% of all plastics produced.

The company’s proprietary process quickly dissolves PE and PP, removing contaminants and odors, resulting in a high-quality product comparable to virgin plastic, while operating under low temperatures and pressures. This method not only lowers costs but also achieves an impressive 80% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional plastic production.

As EU regulations in 2030 mandate increased recycled content in packaging, ReVentas is positioned to address the anticipated demand for high-quality secondary raw materials, transforming plastic waste into valuable resources.
