Massive Crane Ship Graces Jamestown Waters
JAMESTOWN, R.I. (WJAR) — A striking sight has captivated locals and visitors in Narragansett Bay: the Thialf, the world’s second-largest crane ship, towering 470 feet. Since Memorial Day, it has anchored off Jamestown while on route to a wind energy project near Long Island.
Owned by a Dutch company, the Thialf boasts the remarkable capacity to lift over 14,000 tons. Its current stay involves securing onboard equipment, conducting safety inspections, and facilitating the embarkation of a unionized construction crew.
Bart Totten, Jamestown’s harbormaster, expressed surprise at the ship’s presence, noting, "I think like everybody else you’re saying, ‘Wow, that’s a big crane.’" He added that familiarity with wind farm projects in the area has made the arrival less unexpected for residents.
The Thialf is expected to depart by Sunday, though exact timing remains uncertain. As it prepares for its critical role in renewable energy efforts, the vessel continues to draw attention and curiosity in the region.
