Rhode Island’s Hurling Scene: A Blend of Sports and Community
On a recent episode of the Rhode Island Report podcast, co-founder Michael Kennelly introduced listeners to hurling, a fast-paced sport lauded for its similarities to hockey, baseball, and soccer. Dubbed "the fastest game on grass," hurling features a large field measuring 150 yards by 90 yards, where players use an ax-like stick, or hurley, to strike a ball, known as a sliotar, toward a soccer goal. Scoring can yield three points for a goal or one point for hitting the ball over the crossbar.
Kennelly, who was inspired to form the Providence Hurling Club after witnessing local teens playing the sport, shared that the grip on the hurley is the opposite of a baseball bat. The thrill of striking the ball well is compared to a satisfying golf swing, eliciting a rush for players.
The club, established a decade ago, has since captured the spirit of the sport in Providence, drawing aficionados like Martin Green and Brendan Byrne, who are both known for their memorable nicknames—“Head” and “Bojo,” respectively. Green, a hurling enthusiast with previous experience in Ireland, claims the sport combines elements of various games, enhancing players’ coordination and skills.
Team gathering moments, such as Lorcin Grall rallying teammates with tradition and camaraderie, evoke a sense of community and mutual support, essential to the sport’s charm. The Providence Hurling Club practices Wednesday evenings at Gano Street Field and has matches scheduled, including an upcoming showdown at the Irish Cultural Centre of Greater Boston.
