Title: The Legacy of Cheese Rolling: Chris Anderson Shares Insights as Event Grows Globally

As the annual cheese-rolling event at Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire continues to gain international acclaim, Chris Anderson, a 23-time champion, reflects on his remarkable journey. Now 37 and retired from racing, he embodies the spirit of the event—balancing speed with control and bravery with thorough preparation.

Anderson advises aspiring competitors to prioritize safety and skill over reckless abandon. "It’s risky, there’s no doubt about it," he emphasized, highlighting the importance of staying upright. His military background contributes to his strategy; if a fall occurs, he suggests employing an army roll to mitigate injury.

Having started as a local lad in Brockworth, Anderson entered the competition at just 16, claiming his first victory the following year. Despite suffering injuries, including a broken ankle during a post-race celebration, he became a household name within the community and beyond. "I think it is something like 600 years," he speculates about the event’s history, noting its pagan roots and the camaraderie it fosters.

The popularity of the race has surged, partially due to social media’s reach, bringing attention to this quirky event. Recent races have raised safety concerns, prompting the Tewkesbury borough safety advisory group to declare the event unsafe. Nevertheless, Anderson argues that cheese rolling is no more dangerous than motocross or mountain biking.

As a father of three, he hopes to deter his own children from the sport, despite one expressing interest once they reach adulthood. Anderson remains adamant about his retirement, nursing a hip injury from a marathon. With the event thriving, his legacy as the cheese-chasing king endures, underscoring the blend of excitement and tradition that defines Cooper’s Hill.
