Providence, RI – A Brown University student, Alex Sheih, appeared before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Wednesday to address the soaring costs of higher education. The committee discussion, titled “The Elite Universities Cartel,” explored the perceived collusion among Ivy League institutions that contributes to high tuition fees. Chairman Scott Fitzgerald criticized Ivy League schools for prioritizing profit and prestige over education, labeling them as cartels.

Sheih expressed concern that higher education is becoming inaccessible for many families, noting that Brown has significantly increased its number of administrators over the years, which he believes is linked to rising costs.
During the hearing, Rep. Ben Cline highlighted the staggering estimated cost of attendance at Brown for the 2025-26 academic year—$97,284—challenging Sheih on whether a degree from such an institution is worth nearly $400,000. Sheih responded that, while a degree may be beneficial for some, the upfront cost is prohibitive for most students. Following controversy over DOGE-style emails he sent to university staff, Sheih was subjected to disciplinary action, which he ultimately won.
