DHS Warns RI, Providence, and Central Falls of Potential Consequences for Sanctuary Jurisdiction Status

DHS Targets Rhode Island Cities as Sanctuary Jurisdictions

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has identified Providence and Central Falls, along with the state of Rhode Island, as sanctuary jurisdictions that are allegedly hindering federal immigration enforcement. In a press release dated May 29, DHS stated that these areas are endangering American citizens by protecting undocumented immigrants and must revise their policies to comply with federal immigration laws or risk losing federal funding and facing legal actions.

While a spokesperson for Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera indicated the city had not yet received a formal notification of non-compliance, Providence did not respond to inquiries. The list was created following a Trump administration executive order and may be updated regularly, though it was removed from the DHS website on June 1 amidst criticism and claims of inaccuracies.

The DHS has noted Rhode Island’s designation results from a court order related to sanctuary requirements, but specifics remain unclear. Rivera emphasized the city’s commitment to community safety, highlighting a lawsuit against the Trump administration over mandates for federal justice funding recipients. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse criticized the DHS stance, underscoring Rhode Island’s compliance with federal warrants. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem warned that failure to conform would have consequences for sanctuary jurisdictions.
