DHS Targets Rhode Island Cities as Sanctuary Jurisdictions

While a spokesperson for Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera indicated the city had not yet received a formal notification of non-compliance, Providence did not respond to inquiries. The list was created following a Trump administration executive order and may be updated regularly, though it was removed from the DHS website on June 1 amidst criticism and claims of inaccuracies.
The DHS has noted Rhode Island’s designation results from a court order related to sanctuary requirements, but specifics remain unclear. Rivera emphasized the city’s commitment to community safety, highlighting a lawsuit against the Trump administration over mandates for federal justice funding recipients. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse criticized the DHS stance, underscoring Rhode Island’s compliance with federal warrants.
