University of Rhode Island Appoints New Dean for College of the Environment and Life Sciences
SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Jean VanderGheynst has been appointed the new dean of the University of Rhode Island’s College of the Environment and Life Sciences, effective July 1. VanderGheynst transitions from her role as engineering dean at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where she served for six years, significantly enhancing research initiatives and educational programs.
She takes over from John Kirby, who retired in March. The URI college is renowned for its interdisciplinary focus on pressing issues related to environmental sustainability, agriculture, and public health. VanderGheynst will lead efforts to advance the college’s academic, research, and extension programs, aiming to secure external funding from both public and private sectors.
In her statement, VanderGheynst highlighted the college’s strong foundation in teaching excellence, research, and community engagement, positioning it well to tackle both regional and global challenges. Her extensive experience, including three years as interim dean at UMass Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science and Technology, will be instrumental as she steers the college toward new opportunities.
