Chinlone: A Glimpse into Myanmar’s Resilient Cultural Heritage Amidst Challenges
Yangon, Myanmar – The traditional sport of chinlone, revered as Myanmar’s national game, has faced significant challenges in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing civil conflict following the 2021 military coup. Despite these obstacles, the spirit of chinlone endures, with players like 74-year-old Win Tint emphasizing the game’s transcendent ability to foster concentration and patience. “Once you get into playing the game, you forget everything,” Win asserts.
Originating over 1,500 years ago, chinlone merges sport and art, often set to music. Men participate in a circle, showcasing stylized footwork, while women perform solo, displaying acrobatic feats, such as walking on tightropes while juggling the ball. These unique styles differentiate the male and female experiences, highlighting the sport’s cultural significance.
However, participation has waned as economic struggles rise. Artisans face difficulties obtaining rattan, the material essential for crafting chinlone balls. Pe Thein, a master ball maker, expresses concern for the sport’s future, noting the challenges posed by conflict, especially in Rakhine state, where access to rattan has become precarious due to violence.
Chinlone shares similarities with other Southeast Asian sports like “sepak takraw” and “sipa,” yet its historical roots and tradition stand distinctly in Myanmar. In 1953, formal rules were established to promote the sport as a core element of national identity.
Despite the turmoil, silver linings exist as enthusiasts gather beneath highway overpasses and dimly lit streets to practice. As player Min Naing puts it, “No one else will preserve Myanmar’s traditional heritage unless the Myanmar people do it.” With perseverance and community dedication, chinlone remains a vibrant thread in Myanmar’s cultural fabric.
