Judge Rejects Government’s Request to Transfer Milford Teen Held by ICE to Rhode Island

Judge Denies ICE Request to Transfer Milford Teen

Milford, MA – A federal judge has denied the government’s request to transfer 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes, a Massachusetts teenager detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Gomes, a junior at Milford High School, was taken into custody on Saturday as he was heading to volleyball practice. ICE agents had been searching for his father, an undocumented immigrant, and mistakenly identified Gomes as a target due to his expired visa.

Currently held in a holding room at ICE’s Burlington field office, Gomes awaits a scheduled immigration hearing on Thursday. He has been unable to be placed in a detention facility due to lack of available beds. ICE officials sought to transfer him to a facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island, claiming it would provide better medical care and support during his detention.

However, Gomes’ legal counsel opposed the transfer, arguing that it may complicate his case and delay his upcoming hearing in Chelmsford. They expressed concerns about the potential impact on his health and well-being.

In a heartfelt video released by Gomes’ family, his parents pleaded for his release, emphasizing the emotional toll his detention has taken on them. "I love my son. We need Marcelo back home; it’s no family without him," his father stated, underscoring their desire for reunion.

Thursday’s hearing will primarily serve as an introduction to the deportation process, while also serving as a bond hearing to determine whether Gomes can be released from custody.

This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding immigration enforcement and its effect on families, especially in local communities. Gomes has lived in the U.S. since he was seven years old and is deeply rooted in his community.
