Eleanor Slater Hospital is experiencing a significant revitalization under its CEO, Brett Johnson, who emphasizes its commitment to being a long-term acute care facility. The hospital is enhancing staff training, increasing employee compensation in collaboration with the governor’s office, and implementing an anonymous reporting system to address employee concerns. One of their greatest challenges has been shifting the perception of Eleanor Slater from a “hospital of last resort” to a provider of specialized care, while also developing step-down care options for patients.
Rising costs have emerged as another hurdle; estimates for the Zambarano campus overhaul have surged from $109 million to $187 million due to an unmet need for services identified in a 2023 assessment. Johnson anticipates final design documents by early 2026, aiming for construction completion by 2028. Meanwhile, renovations at the Cranston location are progressing on schedule, expected to cost $72 million and create a state-of-the-art psychiatric unit.
Despite staffing shortages and workplace culture concerns, Johnson highlights ongoing recruitment efforts, with four full-time physicians and partnerships with local colleges to bolster staffing levels.
