Rhode Island Legislators Introduce Bill to Support Matunuck Oyster Bar’s Reopening
In response to the devastating fire that forced Matunuck Oyster Bar to close in late May, members of the Rhode Island House and Senate have introduced a bill aimed at facilitating its temporary reopening. Representatives Carol Hagan McEntee and Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski unveiled the "Take It Outside" legislation, which would permit the popular restaurant to operate in its adjacent parking lot, allowing the establishment to serve customers while it rebuilds.
“Many in our community were heartbroken by the fire at Matunuck Oyster Bar. With the busy summer season approaching, it’s crucial for both Perry Raso and his dedicated employees,” stated Sen. Sosnowski. The initiative seeks to support approximately 50 employees who rely on the restaurant for their livelihoods. The act is set to expire on June 30, 2027.
Local officials are gathering support, with the South Kingstown Town Council scheduled to discuss a resolution for the bill at an upcoming meeting. The House bill (2025-H 6392) will be reviewed by the House Committee on Small Business, while the Senate bill (2025-S 1139) is slated for consideration by the Senate Committee on Housing and Municipal Government.
