Upcoming Funding Cuts Will Impact Rhode Island’s Public Media

Public Media Faces Critical Funding Threat in Rhode Island

Providence, RI – The future of public media in Rhode Island hangs in the balance following a "rescission request" from the Trump administration aimed at cutting federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. This proposal requires majority approval from both the U.S. House and Senate within 45 days to take effect, threatening approximately $1 million in funding critical to The Public’s Radio and Rhode Island PBS, equating to 10% of their operational budget.

In an interview with political reporter Ian Donnis, Pam Johnston, CEO of The Public’s Radio, expressed concern over the possible implications of this funding loss. "It would make a serious, devastating impact on our work, journalism, and storytelling," she stated.

Johnston emphasized the importance of public media, framing it as a vital and trustworthy source of information in an era of declining independent voices. She called for community members to advocate for the preservation of public media by contacting their congressional representatives, sharing their stories, and supporting public media initiatives through donations.

The clock is ticking as both chambers of Congress consider the administration’s proposal, leaving public media’s future uncertain.
